Average (mean)

How to use it

1

Drop in your numbers

Type them, or paste a column straight from a spreadsheet. Spaces, commas, semicolons and line breaks all work as separators.

2

Watch it total up

The mean appears immediately and updates on every edit. Anything that is not a number is quietly skipped.

3

Compare the measures

Below the average you get the median, mode, range, sum, count and the smallest and largest values in one glance.

Mean, median or mode?

The mean

Add everything up and divide by how many there are. It is the everyday "average" and works well when values cluster together.

The median

The middle value once the numbers are sorted. It ignores extreme outliers, which is why incomes and house prices are usually reported as medians.

The mode

The value that shows up most often. Useful for spotting the most common size, score or response in a set.

Getting the average right

The arithmetic mean is the sum of your values divided by the count. For the numbers 12, 15, 9, 20, 15, 7 the sum is 78 and there are 6 values, so the mean is 78 ÷ 6 = 13. It is the measure most people mean when they say "average".

When the mean can mislead

A single very large or very small value drags the mean towards it. If nine people earn 30,000 and one earns 300,000, the mean salary looks like 57,000 even though almost everyone earns far less. The median — here 30,000 — describes the group far better.

Reading the range

The range is the largest value minus the smallest, and it tells you how spread out the data is. A small range means the numbers are tightly grouped; a large one means they are scattered. Together with the average it gives a quick feel for the shape of your data.

Pasting from a spreadsheet

You can copy a whole column and paste it in — each number on its own line is read correctly. Mixed separators are fine too, so a messy list like 3, 5 8;11 is parsed without complaint.

Common questions

How do I calculate an average?

Add all the numbers together and divide by how many there are. For 12, 15, 9, 20, 15 and 7 the sum is 78 and the count is 6, so the average is 13. The tool does this the moment you type.

What separators can I use between numbers?

Spaces, commas, semicolons and line breaks all work, and you can mix them. This lets you paste a column from a spreadsheet or a comma-separated list without reformatting.

What is the difference between mean and median?

The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted. The median is more robust when a few extreme values would distort the mean.

What happens if there is no repeated value?

The mode is only defined when a value appears more than once. If every number is unique, the tool reports that there is no mode rather than inventing one.

Can I use decimals and negative numbers?

Yes. Values like 3.5 or -12 are handled correctly, and results are rounded to a sensible number of decimal places.

Is my data kept private?

Yes. All the statistics are computed in your browser. Nothing you paste is uploaded or stored, and the page works offline once loaded.
